Natural Versus Synthetic Pillow Fills
Popular pillow inserts include natural and synthetic fills. Synthetic fills are often comprised of siliconized polyester fibers. This allows for a softer pillow that retains its shape and does not clump together. Natural fills include a mixture of feathers and down that are naturally siliconized and can trap air for better insulation.
When choosing a fill for your pillows, it is important to note that you cannot mix natural and synthetic fills because the feathers will shred the polyester filaments and destroy the product. The quill from the feather provides structure for the pillow but can be rough on other materials due to its inability to cluster. The quills poke the polyester fibers and rip the clusters apart, damaging the pillow’s ability to fluff. Deciding between natural and synthetic fills depends on the area of usage.
